Are bioidentical hormones safe? It’s one of the most common questions we hear from patients first exploring hormone replacement therapy. At the Marion Gluck Clinic, we are the home of bioidentical hormones, having pioneered Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) for over two decades. Our clinic offers a safe, personalised approach to managing hormonal imbalances for both men and women. Here’s everything you need to know about the safety of BHRT.
What Are Bioidentical Hormones?
Bioidentical hormones are derived from yams and designed to match the exact chemical structure of hormones naturally produced by your body. Unlike synthetic hormones used in traditional HRT, BHRT is tailored to your unique hormonal needs, delivering effective results with fewer side effects.
Whether you’re experiencing symptoms from menopause, perimenopause, PMS, PMDD, PCOS, thyroid dysfunction, or low testosterone, BHRT works to restore balance and improve your quality of life.
If you are considering bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and are wondering
If bioidentical hormones are safe, here is the key information you need to know about their safety and efficacy.
Are Bioidentical Hormones Safe?
Over the years there has been much publicity over the health risks of HRT and whether bioidentical hormones are a safe alternative. At the Marion Gluck Clinic, we prioritise transparency and patient safety above all else.
Research shows that HRT, in particular synthetic HRT, can slightly increase the risk of certain cancers. For example long-term combined HRT use can increase breast cancer risk by around 2%, while oestrogen-only HRT shows a smaller increase of 0.5%.
These findings are based on a review of 58 published and unpublished studies which followed women over 50 taking combined HRT, who were followed up 20 years later. (Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer, The Lancet, 2019)
The Lancet reviewed multiple studies, including those that used synthetic HRT, particularly synthetic progestins, which were found to increase breast cancer risk.
When considering whether hormone replacement therapy is the right choice for you, it’s important to consider all factors. For many women the benefits far outweigh the risks as HRT provides effective relief from menopause symptoms and other hormone imbalances and leads to an improved quality of life.
The Protective Effects of BHRT
Unlike traditional HRT, BHRT is different. It uses micronised progesterone instead of synthetic progestins, which has been found to be a safer alternative that does not come with the same health risks.
Studies from the EPIC trials by Fournier et al show that the risk of breast cancer with micronised progesterone is considerably lower.
Two studies in the journal Gynaecological Endocrinology found that the progesterone used in bioidentical hormones has a protective effect against ovarian and endometrial cancer. Additionally, it does not increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (blood clots) often linked to traditional HRT.
BHRT provides an extremely safe and effective treatment for millions of people, helping to alleviate symptoms of hormone imbalance in both women and men.
The Benefits of BHRT
When prescribed and monitored by expert hormone doctors, BHRT offers transformative benefits which include:
- Relieves menopause symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness.
- Improved mood and emotional stability
- Increased energy and vitality
- Better sleep quality
- Improved libido
- Stronger heart and bone health
- Prevention of osteoporosis
- Improved muscle tone and mass
- Better memory and cognitive function
Are There Side Effects to BHRT?
While BHRT is widely recognised as a safe and effective treatment, it’s important to be aware of potential side effects. These can vary depending on your individual response and the formulation of your treatment. Common side effects may include:
- Temporary bloating or breast tenderness
- Mild headaches
- Nausea
- Skin irritation with topical applications
The good news is that these side effects are usually short-lived and often resolve as your body adjusts to the therapy. At the Marion Gluck Clinic, our doctors ensure your treatment is carefully monitored and adjusted to minimise any side effects.
